FOI Music creates original soundtracks for visual stories, fashion films and monthly FOI Magazine projects. This journal documents the thinking behind that work in clear, practical language.

The idea

Cliché enters when music tells the audience what to feel before the image has created a reason. Intimate fashion films become stronger when the score observes the subject rather than announcing seduction. Curiosity, humour, power, awkwardness and calm are all part of sensuality.

Sensual music does not need the same slow beat, whispered vocal and predictable drop. For FOI Music, the purpose is always to keep the emotional meaning clear while giving the listener enough space to form a personal relationship with the work.

How the craft supports it

Change one expected element. Keep the tempo slow but use dry percussion. Keep the harmony romantic but remove the obvious bass swell. Let a close-up cut against an unresolved chord. Contrast creates attention while still respecting the editorial mood.

A strong production decision should still make sense when the visual reference is removed. Sound and image can belong to the same world without one becoming dependent on the other.

A practical way to begin

Write three versions of the opening twenty seconds: one with melody, one with rhythm and one with atmosphere only. The version that leaves the image most alive is usually the best foundation.

Begin with one honest intention, test it in the real context where the work will be experienced, and remove anything that competes with that intention.
